British Values
All schools have a duty to ‘actively promote’ the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values were first set out by the government in the ‘Prevent’ strategy in 2011.
The Prevent Strategy
The updated Prevent Strategy contains three objectives: to respond to the ideological challenge of terrorism and the threat from those who promote it; to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure that they are given appropriate advice and support; and to work with sectors and institutions where there are risks of radicalisation that we need to address. In school we have members of staff trained as Prevent trainers: Mrs Hannah Trickett and Miss Katie Saxon. The staff lead regular training and updates in school for all staff.
How we teach The British Values
At Maple Cross the values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance are taught and pupils provided with opportunities to experience and develop the knowledge and understanding of each.
